For anyone’s who’s been with a laptop but without an available outlet, the prospect of a device that could charge it for days seems too good to be true. But experts think the fuel–cell technology that could do so is only a year or two away – and this time, they’re serious. The cells, which convert combustible liquids and gases into power, have long been declared the next generation of portable power sources. When the U.S. Department of Transportation changed its hazardous material regulations to permit cells with methanol, butane and formic acid onto airplanes, though, it made fuel–cell technology that much closer to hitting American shelves. “That was one of the largest challenges to the market, to overcome that regulation issue,” said Sara Bradford, an energy and power systems consultant, in an AP report. Now that it’s cleared that hurdle, will fuel–cell technology be on the U.S. market in the form of tech–powering devices by March 2010?
